BLUE LIGHT:

Is the light that projects from screens we use all the time, such as: iPads, smartphones, TVs, computer monitors, and laptops.

Here’s what doesn’t need research: 415 to 445nm is super hot light, and if it’s really focused and brought up close – when you’re talking about a tablet six inches from a kid’s face – it’s got to be significant,” said Dr. William Harrison, a renowned optometrist in Laguna Beach, Calif., who has been following the research on blue light closely for the past couple  years.

BLUE LIGHT EXPOSURE AND INSOMNIA!!!


Research has demonstrated that blue light exposure suppresses the production of melatonin, the major hormone secreted by the pineal gland that controls sleep and wake cycles. It also can cause hyperactivity in children. (1)

But melatonin suppression has far worse consequences than simply poor sleep outcomes and hyperactivity in children: it has also been shown to increase the risk of cancer, impair immune system function, and possibly lead to cardiometabolic consequences such as type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, and heart disease…let alone automobile accidents. (2)

We all know resting technology isn’t much of an option. Who can go to sleep without checking that last email or watching funny cats?

Recent studies suggest that the blue end of the light spectrum may contribute to retinal damage and possibly leads to Macular Degeneration. (3)

The retina can be harmed by high-energy visible radiation of blue/violet light that penetrates the macular pigment found in the retina. A study by The Schepens Eye Institute, shows that macular pigment with low density represents a risk for blindness caused by the cells dying. (4) 

Unfortunately, once even minimal retinal damage has occurred, Blue Light is even more toxic.  The retinal damage actually allows even more Blue Light to enter the eye, compounding damage.

Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in adults. It is caused by the death of cells in the back part of the eye called the retina in the Macula. The retina is the part of the eye that focuses, helps you read, drive and recognize people. There’s no fix for it!! (5)

Several studies have suggested that using electronic devices like e-readers and smartphones, or even watching television in or before bed can disrupt sleep. Robert Rosenberg, DO, author of Sleep Soundly Every Night, Feel Fantastic Every Day, recommends avoiding any light-emitting technology for at least one hour before bedtime.

“The blue light given off by computers, smartphones, tablets, and TV prevents the production of melatonin which helps the body become sleepy,” he says. If you don’t want to give up reading your Kindle Fire or using your iPad in bed, follow this advice from a 2013 Mayo Clinic study: Keep the device at least 14 inches from your face and turn down your screen’s brightness to reduce your risk of light-related sleep problems. (6)

The only option is preventative care, and studies are showing that blue light is breaking down the macular at faster rates due to its high level of vision heat.
